Technique: Pendant with Circle Cutouts

Challenge:
- To create a double-sided pendant using circular clay pieces with smaller circles cut out of them.
- To find a way to join the pieces so that both sides of the pendant remained visible and attractive.
- To achieve neat, professional-looking edges while maintaining the design.
Lessons Learned:
- This technique is more challenging than it first appears, and I will need to experiment with it several more times to master it.
- I loved the colour combination, with a soft muted purple on one side and a jelly-roll effect using white and the same purple on the other.
- Finishing the edges neatly was difficult, but using an extruded strip around the edge seemed to be an effective solution.
- Creating clean, attractive joins is the area that needs the most practice, and I can see plenty of opportunities for improvement with future attempts.
- Even though the result wasn’t perfect, it gave me a good foundation to build on and several ideas for refining the technique.

Reflection:
This piece felt like an experiment in balancing design and construction. While the finished pendant didn’t quite match my vision, it showed me what is possible with the technique and highlighted the areas that need more attention. The contrasting effects on the two sides made the effort worthwhile, and I’m looking forward to revisiting this idea with a little more experience and a few new approaches.
